Chapter 8
Miranda felt protected and ready for battle as their small group left the lair stealthily to travel into the hot desert air and into the rocky terrain beyond. She doubted that anyone would be able to find Jacobâs lair unless he led them there himself, it was well hidden and the caves themselves were a maze to get through, deliberately, so she thought. She wondered how long his kind had to deal with the reptiles hunting them and warring with them. It could not be a comfortable existence to know that you could be wiped out by another species, similar to your own in many regards, but so alien in others. She hoped these weapons they had talked about would deter the reptiles, if they decided to attack their small band. Although as secretive as they were being, she doubted they would even be detected as they traveled through the hot desert.
Miranda was surrounded by men on all sides, with Jacob by her side constantly giving orders in his soft, authoritative voice that made everyone around him instinctively obey quickly without a momentâs hesitation. It was not hard to see why his people respected him and had him as their leader, for he was quick witted and able to see dangers that others would overlook. Several times they stopped to go around quicksand or avoid one of the small groups of large carnivorous birds that were on the planet. Sometimes his keen hearing would hear the reptiles on patrol and they would stop with barely a whisper of sound to alert anyone to their presence.
On Earth he would have been a four-star general with his leading and fighting skills the way they were operating. Here on this planet he was the leader of a group of people who had lost their lairs and who relied on him to lead them to a better place in the future. For it had not escaped her notice that the men were not only protecting her and Madilyn, but Jacob as well. It was just as obvious that he did not like this and merely put up with it to make them happy, he was fully capable of taking care of himself in any situation that arose. This only made her respect him even more than she already did. For she knew how hard it must be, for an alpha male like himself, to put himself behind those he was leading.
She knew she should not be so caught up in him, but she could not seem to take her eyes off of him. It was embarrassing that she was getting turned on as he gave orders and expected to be obeyed instantly. She was not normally some docile little woman that let others boss her around at will, in fact she was the exact opposite of this. Her father often called her feisty and her mother despaired that she would ever find anyone that could put up with her willful ways. Yet here
